Create an Open House Video with Images!

I knew creating graphics of all sorts were incredibly simple, but amazing with @AdobeSpark because I had used them with students for many reasons. What I didn’t know, and should have – ahem, is how crazy simple and incredible creating a video out of images is!

To get started, I first organized ALL the photos I wanted to use in my @GooglePhotos app. If you are like me, your photos might be unorganized and under several accounts. (Insert another – ahem.) Thankfully, Google makes it a fairly straight forward process to upload and share photos into an album. On your device, phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app. At the bottom of the screen, tap the Album link, then the large plus sign to create an album. Add a title to the album, then just under tap the + sign to start selecting the photos you would like to see in your Open House video. You will then see all the photos that are available on the device. Tap each photo you wish to add to the created album and you will see a blue check mark indicating which images are selected. Once you have all the images you want selected, you can Add the images. After all images have added to the album, it will then offer you the option to share the album, which now you can share this album to any person or account you wish. Tap the share icon and it will offer you names, emails and a space to type in a phone number or email of any contact you wish to add. Once submitted, you will be able to view this same album from any device or application that links to Google Photos. This is where Adobe Spark comes in!

Adobe Spark integrates with Google Photos as well as many other photo managing applications. After you have created an album with Google photos or any of these other image applications, you will be able to easily select and import those images into a project on Adobe Spark. Let’s get started.

Open Adobe Spark and click on the blue plus sign at the top of the page.

It will immediately open to a large library of templates which are amazing and you may choose to use. I chose to click on the top right corner where it says, “Create from scratch”.

You will be given three options for creation. For this project, choose video.

Next, it will offer you a large canvas to work asking you to name your project. Name carefully. This is the name the file will be given once you finish your creation. I mistakenly named mine 2019-20 when it is 2018-19… yet another … ahem. *Note to self, more meditation… must learn to live in the now.

Once you name the project you will click the red button that says, Next. Once again, you will be offered templates or the ability to start from scratch. You will be given the chance to edit and change any of these options as you progress so it is simply up to you which option you take. Again, I chose, Start from scratch. It will offer you a quick tips video tutorial, which I recommend watching before getting started.

As soon as you click the red button at the bottom under the video, Ok, I’m ready, it will take you to the project timeline.

You will see what looks like Google Slides across the bottom with options on the right. Every card or Slide at the bottom has the same options as you add images to the card. Each card has some text prompting you with ideas. I started with the title and a full size image. Click on the plus sign in the middle of the card, then the T for text. Next, I wanted to begin adding images. This is where we need to first link our Google Photos account or another photo organizing application you may be using such as Dropbox, etc.

Once you click the image icon above the + sign, you will be given options for which platform you would like to upload images from. You can see there are multiple integrations to choose. You are able to link all of these options if you wish and add images from a variety of sources all in the same project. I chose to first organize my images to Google Photos, but you really do not have to do it that way. For the purpose of this tutorial, I will give directions to uploading from Google Photos, but the process for any of the others listed would be the same.

Once clicking on Google Photos, it will prompt you to log in. Click on your email, enter the password and then it will take you to the next step.

As soon as it links your account, you will now begin to see photos on the right under all photos. To add a photo to each slide, you simply click the photo twice, give it a minute and it will automagically appear on the card. Click on the image again once it is on the card and you will see a pencil. Click the pencil and you will be able to resize the image and drag the image around to a different placement or delete if need be. Under the plus sign in the middle of the card are also the options to add text, video or icons.

Above the panel on the right are more options! You have the layout options. These are great for the intro and outro slides as well as adding transition slides with text. This is also where you can change themes, resize the cards and add music! The themes and music add a really nice option for customizing your video into just exactly what you were looking for.

It is rinse and repeat for each card until you are finished. The process really is pretty simple. I was able to complete a video in just over an hour that had around 75 cards! If you need additional cards added, simply click the + sign on the card to the left. It will add one card each time you click it. If you need to delete, simply hover over the card, then click on the 3 dots that appear. You will see a delete, duplicate, and play from here option.

The last two cards in the project are unable to be deleted for good reason. We always want to give credit where credit belongs. Adobe has allowed us to use this amazing product free of charge and it IS AMAZING. So the last two cards are there to give attribution.

Time to Publish and Share! When you are ready, simply click the Share button at the top of the project screen. You will then be prompted to fill out the Publish options. Once the publish options are filled out, you can click Create link at the bottom of the Publish page.

Multiple sharing options will be offered. It really is a personal preference at that point. I chose to share mine to a Test Class that I have created so that I can see it now, but share it later when I am ready. The good news is, it remains available in my @AdobeSpark account. I can return to it at any time later and re-share if I need to and will for you too!

Open House is one way I can see using @AdobeSpark Video, but I am imagining many other ways now that I know how simple it is to use. For example, I use infographics and posters in my classroom asking my students to show me what they know. I can now see asking students to create powerful videos for the same purpose!
